Things You Should Never Pressure Wash

Pressure washing is a highly effective cleaning method, using high-pressure water spray to remove dirt, grime, mold, and other contaminants. While convenient, it's crucial to understand that not all surfaces can withstand the intense force. Misuse can cause significant damage, costly repairs, and safety hazards. Here are eight things you should never pressure wash, and what to do instead.

1. Electrical Panels and Meters

Pressure washing electrical panels poses serious risks. High-pressure water can penetrate seals and protective covers, causing electrical shorts, corrosion, and dangerous shocks.

Instead: Use a dry cloth or soft brush to gently remove dust and debris. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth, but ensure the area is completely dry before restoring power. Always turn off power before cleaning electrical components.

2. Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles aren't built to endure high-pressure water. The intense force strips away the protective granules, leading to premature aging and potential leaks.

Instead: Use ARMA-approved soft-wash methods with a low-pressure rinse and specialized roof cleaner. Our soft-wash roof cleaning safely removes algae and stains without damaging shingles.

3. Lead Paint

Lead paint, common in homes built before 1978, poses severe health risks if disturbed. Pressure washing releases toxic lead particles into the air, inhalation risks and environmental contamination. Lead exposure causes serious health issues, particularly in children and pregnant women.

Instead: Hire a certified professional for lead paint removal. Federal and state regulations require specific procedures to ensure safety and avoid legal penalties.

4. Stained Wood

Pressure washing stained wood strips away protective finishes, leaving wood vulnerable to moisture damage, warping, and rot. The high pressure causes splintering and raises the wood grain.

Instead: Use a garden hose, mild detergent, and a soft brush. For stubborn dirt, use a wood cleaner specifically designed for stained surfaces. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before applying new stain or finish.

5. Windows and Window Screens

High-pressure water can shatter glass panes, especially if there are existing cracks. Window screens can be torn or stretched, reducing their effectiveness.

Instead: Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild window cleaner. Professional window cleaning uses water-fed pole technology that safely cleans even high windows.

6. Vehicles

Pressure washing vehicles strips wax and protective coatings, leaving paint vulnerable to scratches and fading. It also forces water into sensitive electrical areas.

Instead: Use a low-pressure hose with car-specific soap. Wash with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel.

7. Air Conditioners

Pressure washing damages the delicate fins and coils, reducing efficiency. Water can also penetrate electrical components, causing shorts and corrosion.

Instead: Turn off power and use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove debris. For deeper cleaning, use a garden hose on low setting to gently rinse the fins.

8. Gutters

Pressure washing can bend, detach, or break gutters. High-pressure water also forces debris into downspouts, causing clogs and drainage issues.

Instead: Use a ladder and remove debris by hand or with a gutter scoop. Rinse with a garden hose to ensure proper drainage. Or hire professional gutter cleaning for safer, more thorough results.

The Bottom Line

Pressure washing is a powerful cleaning tool, but it requires proper technique and the right surfaces. When in doubt, hire a professional who can assess each surface and use the appropriate cleaning method. Get a free estimate from EEC at (908) 578-5587.
